McFly performing 'Party Girl' on ITV

"Yesterday we played Bop-It with McFly. Guess how they did…" by TeenToday

Picture
Yesterday teentoday.co.uk’s roving reporter JessWotWasInGirlsCan’tCatch, from this day forward to be known simply as Jess, went to meet Danny, Dougie, Harry and Tom of McFly fame to talk about music, their inspirations and new soundzzzzzzz* Actually, we played teentoday.co.uk Pop Star Bop-It. And if you hit see more you can see some pics from the day, and join the fun by predicting their score.

Last week the Lawson boys managed to top the chart, but with an unimpressive absolutely dismal score of 11 during the inaugral teentoday.co.uk Pop Star Group Bop-It game - they obviously didn’t get the ‘start practicing’ memo. Do you think McFly did better or worse? They also nominated Tom to play Pop Star Solo Bop-It. How do you think he did? We’ll give you a hint… he’s either the World’s greatest player, or much worse than mediocre.

Oh jeez! Have McFly sold out?

Well who saw this coming!

Since the early 2000s, McFly posters have adorned the walls of teenage girls for their catchy yet family friendly, inoffensive pop rock. The guys all had a cheeky chappy look about them, spiky hair and scruffy clothes. This led to young girls talking about how "buff" and rocker-y they were while lacking the tattoos, piercings and outrageous behaviour so that Mum and Dad didn't mind their young daughters fantasting over Dougie and co. They were the successors to Busted and also proved they were grabbing creative control back in 2008 by setting up their own record label and trying out a more mature direction with their last album Radio:ACTIVE. Alas, the fleeting nature of fame raised its ugly head and the boyband realised that their teenage fans had grown up and moved on to more worthwhile things.

So now the boys are back with Island Records, the above image sees them looking at their photoshopped best and their working with the King of Generic, Mr. Taio Cruz on their new album, Super City.

The lead single from Super City is called Party Girl. It has a distinct club sound, a "woahhhhh" hook very reminiscent of Lady GaGa's Bad Romance and has about as much depth as the kiddie's pool at your local swimming pool. The guitars, bass and drums have been entirely diluted for this song and McFly have ditched their radio friendly inoffensive punk pop tunes for the current trend of electro club bangers.

Now, this does sound like a hit! A big hit at that! Very promising and the superhero theme they're using for this album campaign looks intriguing too. But do you guys think that McFly should have stuck to their original pop rock sound which they've been known for since their debut single back in 2004 or is it about time they switched genres and stuck with the latest trends?

Super City

- Firstly, the Super Site represents a totally new model for connencting with fans and distributing music pioneered by the band and their label. The band themselves invested their own money into it.

- Simply put, it is a Flash virtual world / website.

- This isn’t a Habbo Hotel clone. Instead it is a custom-built virtual world into which the boys having actually been green-screened (they were filmed from all angles and their likeness is in the site - it’s not actually Honey, I Shrunk The Kids).

- Everyone will be able to access the site and engage with the band, in some way, free of charge.

- However a subscription will give you full access to the site. Including the boys’ bedrooms. Now I don’t know about you, but we’d happily spend all our riches (not much) for the chance to spend a night in Dougie’s room.

- More seriously (boooooo) full access includes the ability to download all the band’s music, demos and unmixed tracks, as well as other audio, and access video content and web chats.

- We saw things like how-to guitar lessons with Danny, plus there was the mention of rarities and never-heard-before tracks and even music by the band’s family, friends and producers (guess who?) and their own side projects all part of the subscription… [it goes on].

- This fan community will reward people for supporting the band and contributing to the website’s Super Site’s community using a points mechanism. Although we’re not sure how that links into your subscription and the $$$ you pay up.

- Rewards include discounts to gigs and priority tickets, the chance for meet and greets (and hugs), freebies, and even one-on-one webchats (which sadly would probably be a lot more wholesome than it sounds) amongst various other things.

- A bit like twitcam and other ‘webchats’, you will be able to communicate with the band, but better than that it includes a custom-built vote functionality that allows people to pick A,B,C or D and help the band make decisions whilst ensuring everyone is heard. Presumably the ‘ignoring’ comes when you all pick the worst track on the album to be released.

- EXCITING - importantly the Super Site should see the band release their music GLOBALLY at the same time. Good news for the fans in South America everywhere outside the UK at last!

- It’s basically a well-executed in4merz (and other similar points-for-promotion type sites), pumped up on protein shakes, steroids and a military work out, with a bit of subscription thrown in.

- It’s definitely a needs-to-be-seen-to-be-believed type thing. We’ve seen (and planned out) some rather impressive websites in our time, as well as good old teentoday.co.uk, but it was obvious this isn’t a website-in-a-box type experience. Our lowly expectations were quickly surpassed and we reckon yours will be too.

- The EXACT detail of what was on offer is yet to be 100% confirmed and committed to but we did the right thing for our beloved TTers and spoke with Fletch about the importance of ensuring that this wasn’t one of those generic fanclub sites that promise the world and then just send you a lollipop on your birthday. WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK MARIAH. This definitely isn’t the case.

- If you want our 100% honest opinion as to whether this is a cruel attempt by the band to exploit their fanbase and land a massive pay day the answer is NO. Actually it feels like a genuine idea to create a global community of McFly fans and distribute music to them in the fairest way possible. And it’s great to see a relatively young group lead and pioneer this type this new way of thinking. Good work Tom, Harry, Dougie and Danny!

I’ll Be Your Man

The third and final song we heard at the album playback, I’ll Be Your Man was written in London with Dallas Austin, and is the result of the band’s desire for a more “sexy and soulful” sound. And if you hit ‘see more’ you can hear TT’s verdict.

Let’s start with what this song isn’t - because those of you still reminiscing about a childhood spent stalking McFly version 1.0 outside their London hotels - need to hear this… I’ll Be Your Man is not a young, chirpy guitar pop ballad about a girl not calling you back, or being too busy washing her hair to go and watch Toy Story 3, and whilst this revelation may be painful to some of you, in its place you will find…

...a much slower affair, a kind of classic sounding lightersmobiles-in-the-air big ballad dedicated to the lady in your life (how lucky is Frankie-the-Sats?!), with lots and lots of electric guitar riffs and solos throughout. Free of electronic bleeps, synths and other studio trickery, this is the most McFly track of the three, but it’s much more sweeping and older sounding than some of the boy’s poppier moments that you know and love (and may well soon be missing). It’s all very grown up and serious, but mostly in a good way.

Most impressive on this track are the vocals, unlike anything the boys have delivered before - less shouty, more powerful and affecting, whilst being restrained and delicately nuanced I’ll be your man through the fire / I’ll hold your hand through the flames / I’ll be the one you desire / Honey ‘cos once you understand / I’ll be your man
(we think). Infact the whole thing is rather beautiful, either the soundtrack to an evening sat at home thinking “when will I meet The One” whilst frantically gobbling down Milka and watching Beaches (admit it, you’ve been there too) OR background music for smug couple-y types.

Shine a Light. Mcfly’s next single!

“Shine a Light” is the name of the second single of mcfly’s new album (Single is out 15th November). The song has been written and produced by Taio Cruz. This track is another dance-electronic song with an amazing and catchy chorus!. The song keeps the line of their first single “Party Girl” but according with the people that have heard the track, its so much better than “Party Girl”.Some people compares the track with the stuff that you can find in “Rokkstar” (Taio Cruz latest album)

McFly tell TT about their new album - Part 1 by TeenToday

Happy McFly Day, teentoday.co.uk readers! So far we’ve changed the site’s background (yes, that’s why the site is taking an age to load), and written some words about single two Shine A Light). And now, to celebrate the upcoming release of the new McFly album, which we are hysterical with excitement about, we’ve got a roundup of news about their next record.

Here are a selection of highlights from our morning with McFly last week where we heard three songs from the band’s new album, and got to hear about their slight rather big change in musical direction:

- The band made it very clear that they wanted to challenge themselves as musicians, and wanted to do something different from the get go.

- Tom: “We took influences from Prince and Michael Jackson and great pop icons. We wanted to take it to the next level.”

- Dallas Austin gave the boys a masterclass in being rockstars while they were working with him. They went out to dinner with Elton John, became acquainted with Patrón tequila, visited strip clubs, got in fights and drove Porches around.

- Harry felt that Dallas’ musical background of synths and programming, which is the polar opposite of the McFly sound was a great experience.

- The majority of the album was recorded in England, although some was recorded while the band were in the US.

- Tom reckons that Dallas was used to artists just demanding songs from him, and he didn’t expect the McFly gang to arrive at his doorstep with their own ideas. “It was about what he could bring to what we had already and how we could combine our sounds and influences to come up with something that’s new,” Tom told us.

- Party Girl was born after a night out with Dallas where inspiration struck him on the dancefloor, and he recorded the idea for the song into someone’s phone. This recording was used in the studio the next day, and according to Tom, it “sounded amazing”.

McFly - Shine A Light: shit or hit? by TeenToday

Here’s a review from the second song we heard at the exclusive McFly album launch for the track Shine A Light, penned with Taio Cruz. Before playing it, the boys described the process of the creating the song “like working backwards” - building up from beats, bass lines and drum sounds in the studio, rather than their trademark low-fi approach, working from a piano, creating a complete song before adding the various bells and whistles.

Shine A Light is set to be the boy’s second single from the new album, sounding bigger than the musical output of albums one to four combined, (try to) forget twee charming songs like All About You, because this is a massive sounding uptempo number which, despite sounding more ‘McFly’ and organic than Party Girl, continues that theme. Although we’re going to say it’s actually better.

It has more punch than a school disco, a soaring high-pitch vocal in the verses and a massive Shine a light on her / Shine a light on her / Shine on her / If anybody sees her chorus. That chorus also comes complete with sing-a-long Eh-Eh-Ehs that fans of Rihanna’s Umbrella will be familiar with, and should translate into a life-changing pop moment in a live setting. So pretty good then, and there’s more…

It also sounds like a song containing hidden gems that are the reward for repeat listens - but obviously having heard it only once it is rather difficult to know if that’s the case. We’re labelling this as ‘probable’.

If we wanted to say something negative about Shine A Light, we’d claim it’s a calculated attempt to sound current at all costs (synthy radio friendly monster track are sort of the ‘in’ thing right about now), but the quality of the production, the vocal delivery and the song’s dynamic and exciting form (whilst still being accessible on first listen) lift it far past this and personify the passion and ambition that the boys claimed led the creation of this album. The first step on a long journey to be the world’s biggest band and teentoday.co.uk’s ‘real’ comeback.

Super City will cost £6 a month?

Island Records is preparing to launch a monthly subscription service for the band McFly, called Super City. It’ll cost £6 a month, and will offer exclusive music, news updates, contests and blog posts. Island is aiming to sign up at least 100,000 fans to be ‘pioneers’ in the service, who’ll also get to watch sound checks, attend meet and greets and get into VIP sections at gigs. There’ll be a points system to help other fans gain these privileges too by using the site. It’ll launch this Autumn, just before the band’s new album. “We want to look after out fanbase and one of the ways in which we can avoid people trying to distribute content illegally is by giving fans as much access to everything McFly do as possible,” says manager Matthew Fletcher.

The fans’ verdict on McFly’s Party Girl

We all know what the press think of McFly’s new musical direction, but what do the fans think?

At first the fans seemed divided, with everyone either loving it or hating it. While some people were crazy about the new sound, others were likening it to JLS, branding it too different for McFly.

Well now everyone has had time to listen to the track a few times and think it over, we decided to ask the fans for their opinions again, and this time around the reactions seem mostly positive.

‘I love it nothing to what they are used to playing but its called growing up and experimenting!’ – @

‘It’s quite different but that’s why I can’t wait to hear other songs from their new album’ – @

‘Everything that Mcfly stands for has been stripped away, it sounds just like every other pop song. Give the song to JLS!’ – @

‘It’s good but I prefer here comes the storm which was their leaked track. Not there best one by far!’ – @

‘Different from normal McFLY..’ – @

‘Party Girl By McFly is Different for them and at First I didn’t like it but now I think its an amazing song’ – @

‘I like it because it’s kinda sexy and makes me dance but in some way I still can’t link it to McFly!’ – @

‘It is in fact a great song , and we can see their effort, but it`s not the same McFly and i dont know if i like it’ – @

‘Different – but in a good and exciting way!’ – @

‘I like it, think they deserve some credit for taking a risk rather than just playing it safe’ – @

‘I think party girl is amazing i cant stop listening to it really cant wait for the album now’ – @

‘Love it! I have even got a non-McFly fan converted with the song! Must be good cos she was NEVER a fan’ – @

‘It’s different from the old mcfly, but i loove party girl! Its awesome!’ – @

‘I think it’s brilliant. Totally loved it and the new mcfly sound. I’ll support them no matter what’ – @

‘It’s quite different but that’s why I can’t wait to hear other songs from their new album’ – @

‘I dont really like it -’ @

‘Ive listened to PartyGirl a few times and still dont like it. Its not because Im a ‘bad fan’, I just prefer the old McFly.’ – @

‘Mcfly’s new song party girl is awsome as always their songs are great’ – @

‘The first time I heard this song I was really shocked but now I really like Party Girl’ – @

‘It’s a good song electronically, however I think it’s hardwork to listen to the vocals and the actual instruments, their talent is hidden beneath synthesisers and the like. I dont think it’ll ever be a favourite of mine, but I respect them for trying out a new style. I’m certainly intrigued to hear the rest of the album.’ – @

‘It’s like Justin Beiber meets JLS and they have a baby.’ – @

‘Catchy, but maybe something I’d delete after a while, the lyrics mean nothing to me unlike their other songs ,still <3 them’ – @

‘I really don’t like Party Girl, if the rest of the albums like it I’m not going to bother.’ – Lisaacanfly

‘I’m a mcfly fan and just because they’ve changed their sound a little, i’m still gona love ‘em. & i love the song anyway!’ – @

‘I don’t undersand why they’ve changed to fit in with the charts. They should have kept to what they did best and they’d have still been unique. Instead of trying to be JLS types. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album though.’ – @

‘McFly’s “Party Girl” is awesome! I was suprised at first because it’s different, but I’m in love with it!’ – @

JUST when you thought MCFLY were about to become the X-Men of pop - they return with a new look themed on comic book superheroes. And the fantastic foursome have not only transformed their look - their music's changed direction too.

They have a new LADY GAGA-esque pumping pop sound thanks to super producers DALLAS AUSTIN and TAIO CRUZ.

Lead singer TOM FLETCHER told me: "Our fans will be shocked by this new sound but we felt we had to move on and do something different.

"We look at stars like Gaga and want to compete on that global level."

You'll need super powers to rival pop's Wonder Woman.

America needs more McFly by NYPost

The UK has crowned the boys of McFly with seven #1 singles in the last six years, and the boys have deserved each accolade. The US has only let them play background actors alongside Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine -- remember "Just My Luck?" Anyone? Anyone?

Well today marks the day McFly begins their aggressive American assault and I'm happy to let them surmount me. You know ... musically.

More specifically, their new single "Party Girl " (co-written with R&B songwriter/producer Dallas Austin) is sure to pound the walls off every tween bedroom from here to Texarkana.

Another collaboration on their upcoming album "Super City" is with the pop chart's new king Taio Cruz. His latest single "Dynamite" was crafted by Dr. Luke, the same brains behind Ke$ha's "Your Love is my Drug" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls." Basically a power-house of talent is ready to push these Brits deep down into our Yankee ear-drums until we succumb to their blimey ways.

"Secret Projects"

Thanks to Dan Wootton we know more news about "Secret Projects". He tweeted:
Have you heard about Danny's dance music plans? He's turning into quite the DJ and nearly ready to share his beats..
And Dougie is putting the finishing touches to his clothing range too, which sounds like it'll be pretty cool as well..

The cd-single on 6th September

PARTY GIRL will go on sale in downloads on 5th September and the cd-single on 6th September .
The album is scheduled for November but not yet confirmed the date.

Some articles talking about the "New McFly"

-McFly launch new 'urban' direction with Taio Cruz by BBC

Think of McFly and chances are you'll remember their shiny-guitar-pop, gelled-up hair and the enthusiastic teens who squealed at their every note.
Well, times have changed.
Two years on from spitting from their record company Island and releasing their fourth album Radio: Active the London foursome have taken a brave new step - a total musical makeover and brand new business plan.
Cruz collaboration Most startling to fans will be the change in their music.
For their forthcoming new album they've enlisted the help of producer Dallas Austin who has previously worked with Madonna, Michael Jackson and Pink.
But then there's also British urban sensation Taio Cruz - the man who scored a number one hit in America and the UK with Break Your Heart and helped write both JLS and Cheryl Cole's most recent releases.
Out has gone Dougie, Harry, Tom and Danny's sugary brand of emo-pop. With the aid of these new producers, in comes a synth-driven sultry R&B direction.
New single Party Girl, released in September, is a sexy slab of pop which includes the lyrics: "I'm chained up/I give up/I'm out of mercy/she wouldn't let me go".
Lead singer Tom Fletcher admits it might take a few fans by surprise: "It was a real experiment working with people like Dallas and Taio Cruz - that's what they bring to the table.
"It was about where we could collide and meet in the middle. I wouldn't class it as urban at all, but it's still definitely pop."
'Our' money If fans don't like this new experiment it's not just the band's egos which will be bruised. It could also empty their pockets.
After the band separated with their record company Island in 2008, they've now set up an independent company to look after the pennies, but struck a deal with their old record label (Island, again) to split all profits 50/50.
It's an all-encompassing deal - touring, record sales, merchandise, sponsorship, everything except publishing - which sees the band/management and record company divvy up money equally.
Speaking to Newsbeat, McFly's manager Matthew Fletcher said: "When you go independent, as exciting as it is, our resources are limited.

"We were forced into going independent because to be quite honest the record company ran out of ideas.
"Physical album sales are in decline and I think they just became quite narrow-minded. We had an opportunity to leave, so we did.

"I said to band, 'The worst thing that could happen with this relationship is that you can make half as much money'."
'Taking risks' The band themselves have sunk their hard-earned cash into launching this "joint venture" pinning their hopes on what they're dubbing a "supersite" launched in October.
It's a subscription-based website aimed at enticing fans to spend money on the band via different means all hosted online.
Fans will have the chance to get new music first, accrue points for rewards and interact with their favourite members.
"You have to take risks," said drummer Harry Judd. "We're willing to do that to take this band to the next stage. If everything is split equally they've got the same interest that we have."
New single Party Girl is out on 5 September. The album is out in November.

-McFly are back with an AMAZING new sound! by Heatworld

The build-up to the launch of McFly's new sound has been one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) events of this year's music calendar - but I'm here to tell you that it has all been worth the wait. Yesterday, I (heatworld's Deputy Editor Isabelle Broom) met up with (a very buff, we must say) Tom, Danny, Dougie and Harry to listen to four tracks from their new album and take a look at their revolutionary new website.

McFly initially went over to Australia to begin work on their fifth studio album, but after laying down 10 tracks they all realised what they'd achieved wasn't quite enough. With ambitions to become the biggest band on the planet, McFly knew that what they needed to do was try something more challenging - and that's where Dallas Austin and Taio Cruz came in. Having worked with the likes of Kylie, Pink, Madonna and Britney Spears, producer Dallas was a bit of a daunting prospect for the lads - but they needn't have worried. Dallas fell for McFly immediately and was impressed by both their talent, dedication...and ability to stay out drinking for 22 hours with jet-lag! The result of working both with Dallas and music-magic-wand waving Taio Cruz is some of the most sophisticated and exquisite material the boys have ever produced. Yes, it's a little bit different from the usual guitars and shouty choruses, but that McFly sound is still at the core of everything we heard. First single Party Girl (which you can listen to below) is bold, catchy while the two Taio tracks Shine A Light and Nowhere Left To Run take the old McFly to a whole new level. Smoochy slow song I'll Be Your Man is packed full of the touching lyrics the female McFly fans love, but it all feels a bit more grown up somehow. The boys should feel proud, because this new album is a triumph and credit to all their hard work.

As well as producing an ear-blasting new album and spending at least 100 hours a week in the gym (probably), McFly have also designed a Fansite unlike anything we've ever seen before. Super City is a 3D virtual world where fans can interact directly with the band, upload photos and videos, view exclusive content, play games and earn points to exchange for money-can't-buy prizes such as priority entry to gigs, signed merchandise and even phone calls from the boys themselves. Never before has a band listened to and acted upon the wishes of their fans to such an amazing level - and all their dedication is about to be paid back tenfold.

McFly fans should be piddling themselves with excitement, while those of you who aren't quite on board yet should open your ears and your minds because - trust me - McFly are currently at the best level they've EVER been.

-It's McFly's next Number One single by popjustice

It is a regret we feel today and will have to live with until the end of our now pointless lives that we were not able to attend the McFly music playbacks taking place yesterday and today. Even the invites looked amazing.
There is a small silver lining, however, because it is now possible to listen to a clip of the new single 'Party Girl' with Fearne Cotton making a noise at the end.
It is on someone else's site but the whole thing will probably be on YouTube by the end of today. In a nutshell: Taio Cruz doing 'Bad Romance' with a rocket up its arse.

-McFly go R&B by CMU

McFly have apparently taken a drastic change of direction for their latest album, ditching pop rock for R&B after they hooked up with Britney Spears producer Dallas Austin, who introduced them to tequila, strip clubs and Elton John, and Taio Cruz, who just wrote some songs with the band.
McFly boy Danny Jones told The Sun: "Our influences have been people like Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles, but this time we took inspiration from artists we'd never tapped into". On the subject of working with Austin, Danny's co-frontman Tom Fletcher added: "Dallas introduced us to Patron tequila. He almost killed us on a couple of occasions - it's lethal. He also really likes strip joints, so we'd hammer the tequila and then head off to these clubs. One night we ended up going round Elton John's house in Atlanta for dinner with Dallas. It was a great time".
The album, entitled 'Here Comes The Storm', is due for release in September via the band's own Super Records label. The first single, 'Party Girl', will be out on 4 Sep.

-McFly's spooky booze by The Sun

MCFLY put in an impressive session after checking out new London show Ghost Stories last night. The boyband are back on the UK party circuit ahead of the release of their as-yet-untitled seventh album.
nd they wasted no time in getting stuck into the booze, being spotted at the bar before and after the star-studded event at The Duke of Yorks Theatre, London.

A source said: "The boys are back and bang on form.
"They were at the after party till midnight, then Light Bar in St Martins till 12, then Movida till 4am.
"They worked the room like true pros, but were mostly found proping up the bar!
"Great lads!"

-McFly return with new sound by Mirror

McFly are back with a new sound.
Harry, Dougie, Tom and Danny have been working with R&B hitmaker, Taio Cruz, for comeback track, Party Girl, already A-listed by Radio 1.

 We're told: "It'll surprise everyone."

We know new information about McFly thanks to Dan Wootton. He spent an hour with McFly in the penthouse suite of a plush hotel, the day 13th July.  They said by twitter:
  • McFly are about to make a HUGE pop comeback. Just heard a sneak listen to their new album and it's wicked.
  • Their brand new single Party Girl - produced by Dallas Austin - is a real change in direction. Very GaGa-esque.
  • They're releasing a Taio Cruz-produced track called Shine a Light as second single. It's a real hit in waiting as well.
  • Fans might be a bit surprised because it's a real change in direction but the lads are focussed (and very buff at the moment too).
  • The new McFly song is out in the first week of September when they'll also launch their Super City website. Album follows in time for Xmas.
  • What's super city like? Amazing website, one of the best ive seen.
  • Loads of McFly fans out there. So a bit more news. They've just done another nude shoot and Tom wants people to make love to the new songs!
  • The band are also back with Universal Island Records after going it alone last time. It's a profit sharing deal this time round.
  • For those asking, McFly will do small UK gigs before Christmas then they plan an arena and world tour for next year. Well so Dougie told me.
  • @tommcfly thanks so much for today. So excited by the new music. Gonna be huge.

Teentoday:  I am pretty sure that McFly will be playing stuff from the new album at their gigs in August - who's going?
Teentoday: "McFly fans are freaking awesome. I love how passionate you all are."
Teentoday: "Dougie on the new single from the Saturdays - "It's alright, isn't it?"

McFly said: "McFly will be doing shows before the album release (around October) and into early 2011 but no dates confirmed yet"
